Greetings From the Rector

The Reverend Dena S. Bearl

Beloved of Grace-Calvary,

This note came in the mail while several of our children were attending

Camp Mikell…a request that Claire Garcia, John Andrew’s granddaughter,

who broke her collar bone at camp, be added to the intercessory prayers of

our parish. Of course Jesus’ words come to mind, “Let the little children

come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the

kingdom of heaven belongs.” [Matthew 19:14] But what grabbed me and

made me absolutely grin is that our children believe in the power of prayer

and know to ask their church family to pray together when there is a need.

Douglas V. Steere, a Quaker, teacher, and author wrote:

When we hold up the life of another before God, when we expose it to God’s love, when we pray for its release from drowsiness, for the quickening of its inner health, for the power to throw off a destructive habit, for the restoration of its free and vital relationship with others, for its strength to resist temptation, for its courage to continue against sharp opposition – only then do we sense what it means to share in God’s work, in God’s concern; only then do the walls that separate us from others go down and we sense that we are at bottom all knit together in a great and intimate family.

Two challenges when we intercede to God for those in need:

The first thing we must do as we begin to pray is simply to come into our awareness of God’s presence and place ourselves before God in an open and honest way. As Julian of Norwich wrote:

For our soul sits in God in true rest, and our soul stands before God in sure strength, and our soul is naturally rooted in God in endless love. (The point being that we are not always lovable but we are always loved.)

A second thing to do is to practice praying for those we do not and cannot love in and of ourselves. To pray for our enemies and those with whom we are not reconciled is to do our part in God’s work of tearing down the walls that cause separation in our world and ushering in the peace for which we long.

In Christ’s love,

CELEBRATING OUR HERITAGE

Three years ago I was involved with the Grace-Calvary Rector and Vestryon a weekend conference that  was   entitled, Trim the Sails. We spent  our time recalling our past and looking to the future and suggesting programs and plans we would like to see  accomplished. As a follow-up to that work the   current   vestry  appointed   a Heritage   Committee  and a  Horizon Committee, both of   which have   been hard at work  for the past  several months. We have a wonderful history as a  parish and our future is what we make of it.

At the last vestry meeting I shared with the group an idea that has been percolating for some time. First, I would like to see Grace-Calvary celebrate its past by developing a weekend festival that would use the arts as a means of telling our story in this part of the Diocese and North Georgia. The weekend would feature concerts, chamber music, drama, and visiting poets. Artists, painters, sculptors, and photographers would show their works. An old-fashion “pig roast” with bluegrass music would enliven a Saturday afternoon. A Saturday night auction, both silent and live would bring in funds for whatever uses we decide to feature, such as the Building Endowment. Sunday morning would feature worship and a picnic with entertainment.

I have talked with a number of people, both locally and the larger area to see if they would help support and perform at such a function. Everyone has said “yes” and a number of artists and performers have joyfully agreed to take an active role if we decide to undertake such a project. Our target date would be the early fall of 2008. In the next several weeks we will announce a meeting in St. Julian’s Hall for anyone to come and share their thoughts and ideas about this proposal, so join us for what could be a memorable undertaking.

A second proposal, not unrelated, is to create a video celebrating the life and history of Grace-Calvary Usually this is a very expensive undertaking, but a friend and devoted Episcopalian has helped me do this in other places. These films have been approximately twelve minutes in length tell not only our history, but try to capture who we are as a congregation. Duplicates of the film are given to visitors and newcomers to the parish. Again, if you are interested in this, let me know. We would write the script and my friend would then film life at Grace-Calvary to portray the script. Let me hear from you.

                                                                                    Faithfully,

                                                                                    H.D.H. +

COMMITTEES AND HAPPENINGS

THE BISHOP C. JUDSON HERITAGE CIRCLE: The Bishop C. Judson Heritage Circle is a faithful group of individuals who have given expression of their commitment to bring the Good News of Christ to future generations in our communities and the world by providing in their estate plans for the life and ministry of Episcopal institutions within the Diocese of Atlanta and beyond. By so doing, they have defined their legacy as faithful stewards of the material goods that God has given them, and they are helping to assure that God’s mission will continue to be fulfilled in their parishes, the diocese and the world.  To become a member of the Bishop C. Judson Child Heritage Circle, inform the parish office, the Endowment Fund or the Diocese of Atlanta that you have made provision in your estate plan for the parish, the Endowment Fund of Grace-Calvary Episcopal Church, the Diocese or other Episcopal institution.

Buildings and Grounds extends a sincere thank-you to Jimmy Yearwood for arranging the installation of the new sidewalk connecting St. Julian Hall and the church. Jimmy also facilitated the repair of the sidewalk leading to the St. Julian Hall basement. Jimmy’s involvement with these projects resulted in considerable savings to the church.
