Greetings From the Rector

The Reverend Dena S. Bearl

Beloved at Grace-Calvary,

Epiphany! Christ Incarnate manifesting God’s glory! Scripture expresses this by passing on to us the events when God’s glory shone through Jesus’ life. We express this by allowing God’s glory to shine through our life in Christ.

In April of 2005, the parish was invited to participate in a goal-setting process that we named Trim the Sails.

I love hindsight! Looking back, we can see that progress has been made.

We have developed a core of adult leaders for our youth, with David Todd as our coordinator, have dedicated space in the undercroft of St. Julian Hall for youth ministry, and are working together to establish a program which works for our kids that includes service, study, and fun.

Our communications are improving!

Our all-call emails from Carol Kokesh are getting important news out quickly. If you do not use email, please ask a friend in the parish to “pass it on” to you when they get these emails. Our website is always being updated with increasing information. www.grace-calvary.windstream.net . We are using the lines of communication between committees – vestry – office/priests. Please think this way when you are working on a committee or have an idea or concern. Information needs to flow between these three!

Sacred Space was named as a priority. We now have the Spiritual Formation Resource Room, chaired by Alice Ariail, which will provide quality resources for us and a space for quiet and study. Quiet days reserve our entire property as sacred space each Lent and Advent.

A foundation for planned giving and endowments was seen as essential for the future stability and growth of our parish. With Walton Smith as chair, we now have a foundation with a board of trustees, overseen by the vestry.

Adult education was named as an area that needed improvement. We have called the Rev. Don Harrison to focus his priestly ministry among us in this area.

Discovering and using our spiritual gifts. We had a parish workshop and will need to continue to help our members see how God’s Holy Spirit has gifted each of us to incarnate the good news of Jesus Christ to the glory of God.

Preservation with growth - We want our rich heritage to inform our growth and future horizons.  A Heritage/Horizons Committee is being formed with Clair Langmaid as chair to gather our history and make plans to meet the future.

Other priorities named were:

Grace-Calvary’s Christian leadership within the community

Developing new forms of worship to meet people’s needs

Offering an evening course on the basics of Christianity for members and the unchurched

Completing St. Julian Hall and updating the Parish House

Aging – how to serve the majority of our parish

Young families – how to meet the needs of younger members

Glory cannot be contained but will shine forth! Our joy at Grace-Calvary is learning how to arrange our life together so that God’s glory may flow freely through us – and that includes both goals set in community and each person met in community with expectation of epiphany!

In Christ’s love,

“WHO IS JESUS FOR YOU?”

Dietrich Bonhoffer, the German Lutheran pastor who was an outspoken critic of the Nazis and was arrested and put to death for his part in the assassination attempt on Hitler, wrote that the key question for Christians in the post war era would be, “Who is Jesus Christ for you?” Bonhoffer’s statement has taken on even greater significance in

these early years of the twenty-first century. Contemporary New Testament scholars are revisiting the Jesus of the Gospels seeking to separate out the person of the first thirty years of the first century from the person whom the Gospel writers present forty to seventy years later.

John, writing at the end of the first century, has Jesus saying, “I am…” “I am light.” “I am living water.” Etc. Did Jesus really refer to himself in such a manner? These New Testament scholars are trying to make the point that there is possibly a wide gap between the person of Jesus and the writer’s experience of him. These scholarly efforts to find the “historical Jesus” are not new; Albert Schweitzer, writing in the early twentieth century, produced his famous work, The Search for the Historical Jesus. A century later, we are still searching. The December 18th issue of U.S. News and World Report had as its main feature an article entitled, In Search of the Real Jesus.

For the remainder of the school year the adult “Belief and Unbelief” class will focus on “the search for the real Jesus”. A portion of this endeavor will be our focus for Lent as we search out what really happened during those last few days leading up to the crucifixion. Come join us on Sunday mornings for our adult class and set aside Wednesday evenings in Lent for dinner and discussion.

The Holy Cross Society

The Holy Cross Society is composed of those individuals who have made provision in their estate plans to support the future ministry of Grace-Calvary Episcopal Church.  The society is named for Holy Cross Cemetery, the burial ground of the parish located on New Liberty Road.  Membership is extended to all those who advise the Endowment Fund that they have made such provision for the benefit of the Endowment or of the Parish by will, life insurance or other estate planning device.  Members of the society are also eligible for membership in The Bishop C. Judson Child Heritage Circle of the Diocese of Atlanta.

To receive this publication go to www.episcopalatlanta/.org.  At the bottom of the page one can sign up.  I encourage you to become knowledgeable with the happenings in our diocese and the wider Church.  I will be happy to sign you up for this if you would forward me your e-mail address.  John Andrews

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 21st with Holy Eucharist and

the imposition of ashes at 12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m.

Please be looking for a special brochure on our Lenten offerings

which will be mailed and made available at church.

HELP US “BURN THE MORTGAGE”

In one of the first actions of this year, our vestry, led by our new Senior Warden, Ray Bass, agreed that a primary initiative will be to pay off the St. Julian Hall mortgage.  We are currently paying almost $3600.00 each month to keep from being delinquent.  When we raised the money to expand St. Julian several years ago, the actual construction costs escalated over the Capital funds raised and a low-cost mortgage was taken out for the overrun.  We are now asking to pay off and “burn this mortgage” and eliminate these monthly costs.

The Senior Warden has asked Matt Mixon, Eddy Ariail and Walter Jarck to head up this new fund raising campaign to raise approximately $100,000 to pay off the mortgage and to also allow some funds for the building fund reserve.  The three have met and are preparing to kick-off a fund drive to begin in March with all pledges due before November 1 when we expect a successful closure and a formal “burning” ceremony.

If you enjoy the new St. Julian and are willing to help our “Burn the Mortgage” drive please call Matt, Eddy, Walter or Ray and offer your help.

YOUTH

The Rite 13 group is going to the New Beginnings retreat at Camp Mikell beginning Feb 16-18. They will also participate in the Atlanta Diocese " Hunger Walk", March 11.
