MMUSTARD SEED

Grace-Calvary Church is open to all people for communion with God and each other in Christ. Within and beyond this historic Church we strive to do God’s work: nurturing our spirits, reaching out to those in need, valuing and caring for the diversity of God’s creation.

Greetings From the Rector

The Reverend Dena S. Bearl

Beloved of Grace-Calvary,

The book Those Episkopols by Dennis Maynard is a book I like to give to

people when they are preparing to join the Episcopal Church.  In looking

through it again this year, I ran across this description of the Anglican

Communion:

If you’re looking for a church that has

Morality but not moralism,

The Bible but not bibliolatry,

Law but not legalism,

Emotion but not emotionalism,

Piety but not pietism,

Tradition but not sentimentalism,

Then you’re probably in the right place.

If you’re looking for a church where diversity is

celebrated and not condemned,

where thinking is stimulated and not discouraged,

where righteous living is of greater value than right talking,

where being loving is more important than being right,

you’re in the right place.

If you’re looking for a church where Jesus is central,

a church that is not afraid to ask difficult questions of Him and of itself,

then you are in the right place.

But one word of caution:

In such a church open to the ongoing revelations of God

people will constantly be required

to look at old things in new ways.

Reminds me of these familiar verses:

I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?

 Isaiah 43:19

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth…and I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God…and the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” Rev 21:1ff

As I write this, I am heading south for some rest and renewal. Thank goodness, God never fails to give us new life and new vision if we will provide the time! I hope you will find time for renewal during these summer months.

In Christ’s love,

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES

In the last issue I wrote that the youth of Grace-Calvary are not the

“future of the Church”. Rather, they are the Church Now. Our first class

of the Rite 13 program has now moved on to the J2A portion of the pro-

gram, which will cover the next two  years, and a new class of fifth and

six graders will enter a program entitled, Preparing for the Journey, a

preliminary program written especially for this age group prior to

   beginning Rite 13.

Recently our youth advisors spent an afternoon with Ron Walker, Youth

Director at Grace Church in Gainesville, who is a professional Education

Consultant in private practice. Ron has worked with our advisors in the

past and will be consulted on future occasions. Ron has reworked all of the J2A material and

made it much more “user friendly” for our teachers and is in the process of writing the material

for the next stage of the program, Young Adults in the Church. All of these materials are being

made available to our Advisors and teachers at no charge except the reproduction costs.

Our J2A youth, along with some other young people, will be on a rafting trip with the Rector

during the third week in July and will begin their program in early August. The big event this

year is their Urban Adventure next spring. They will travel to another city and they must

navigate their way around that city using public transportation. They will spend their nights at

either a church or a youth hostel and they will worship in unfamiliar places such as a synagogue.

The purpose of the Urban Adventure is to prepare the young people for their pilgrimage to a

   sacred site, probably overseas.

I tell you all of this because these are your young people. They will need your support,

enthusiasm, and prayers. They will need your financial support. They are your investment in

the present and future of Grace-Calvary. We are very fortunate to have wonderfully dedicated

teachers and advisors who give of their time and energy. I hope that you will join these

dedicated leaders and the clergy in raising up these young people in the community of faith.

COMMITTEES AND HAPPENINGS

PLANNED GIVING – A “planned gift” is one that will be made in the future.  Such gifts include life insurance, bequests by will or various trust instruments that will cause a gift to be made upon the happening of some event.  Such gifts often have beneficial tax consequences for the donor, but must be carefully structured so consult your accountant or tax advisor.

Daughters of the King

Daughters of the King is an Order of Lay Women who commit to prayers and services.  If you feel called to this ministry, please join us for a Continental Breakfast July 8th, at 9:30 a.m. in the Family Room to learn more.

Save the date! ECW’s third annual “Just A Taste” is scheduled for Saturday, August 11 at 7:00 p.m.  Recipes from the two previous years have been selected for a repeat performance and we would love to include some new selections.  Appetizers or dessert recipes that are long-time family favorites or a new find “that is to die for” – we would love to hear from you!  E-mail recipes to Brandy at brandy@glenella.com or call Jennifer at 754-0948 or Alice at 754-5190.  We need volunteers to help with recipe preparation, set-up, servers, clean-up, etc.  A limited number of tickets will be sold and can be purchased from the church office or from any ECW board member.  Price is $25.00 per ticket.  ECW Board members are: Alice Arial, Brandy Aycock, Martha Hunter, Becky Jackson, Margaret Parsons and Jennifer Tench.  Please contact a board member to volunteer or purchase a ticket.

Joyful Hands is a group of ladies getting together the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month in St. Julian Hall from 10am to 1pm.   At our first gathering, we had 8 ladies knitting, quilting, mending, needlepointing and enjoying wonderful fellowship.  Bring a sack lunch, your beverage & whatever project you want to work on.   Hope to see you there.                                             Becky Jackson

Who’s Counting?  How many of us would choose to begin our week by grappling with math problems for several hours?  Well, each Monday morning two of our counters, in rotating pairs, do just that.  They meet in the church office to tabulate, recount, and allocate funds according to the written directions found on our pledge envelopes, checks or cash (notes attached).  Who are these dedicated volunteers who toil on our behalf each Monday morning? They are church members Mary Clarke, Ron House, Jack Johnston (of Baldwin) and Barbara Schick.  Their time and talents freely given to grace Calvary are very much appreciated.  Thank you Mary, Ron, Jack and Barbara.
