Greetings From the Rector

The Reverend Dena S. Bearl

Beloved of Grace-Calvary,

As I begin to write this letter, the parish office staff and volunteers just

enjoyed our last lunch with Jean Chance at our “family room” table. There were wonderful home-cooked dishes, stories and laughter, and the comfort of the familiar as we had our meal together. Sitting at the table with us was Carole McCollum, our new Parish Administrator. She is already blending in to the daily patterns – and will bring new ways and ideas which we will embrace. Carole has spent a week with Jean getting oriented and is beginning to meet people. Please stop by with a friendly hello – and help Carole begin to connect names with faces.

Carole comes to us from St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church in Oakwood, Georgia. Before entering the world of an Episcopal parish, most of her experience has been as an executive assistant in various settings.

She and her husband Jim have lived in Baldwin, Georgia for nine years. (Needless to say, Carole is thrilled over the reduction in her commute to work!) Their daughter, Ginny, is 24 and works as a case manager for DFACS in Lumpkin County. Their son, Brendan, is 21 and attends Georgia Southern. Their German Shepherd, Princess, keeps everything in order at home.

Carole’s hobbies include watercolor painting and collecting vintage religious objects, prints, and statues, some of which you might enjoy seeing in the parish house.

Welcome to Grace-Calvary, Carole, as you join us in going about the wonderful business of being the Church and serving Christ in this place.

  Carole McCollum

In Christ’s love,

THE YOUTH ARE NOT THE “FUTURE” OF THE CHURCH

I can’t tell you how often I have heard advocates of youth ministry say, “The youth are the future of the church!” I must confess that I have said that myself on numerous occasions. It was at Camp Mikell that I heard a teenager declare, “I’m not the future of the church! I’m the present!” That declaration made a great deal of difference to me in how I thought and planned for youth activities and programs. The young people are with us now and we need to be accepting of them and incorporating them into our present and future plans. That process touches on everything we do—liturgy, music, program, and budget.

I hope this reality became apparent two weeks ago when we conducted our Rite 13 liturgy at the eleven o’clock service. A year or more ago we began our Journey to Adulthood program at Grace-Calvary. This is a national program that was developed nearly fifteen years ago in the Diocese of North Carolina. It is based on the premise that adulthood is a designation that is not declared, but earned. It further declares that in every person’s life there are four areas of activity that make up our adult self: social relationships, self understanding, sexuality and spirituality. The J2A program addresses these four areas in each stage of the teenager’s development. These stages are separated into three two-year stages.

Rite 13 begins for those who will celebrate their thirteenth birthday in the next year or so. It marks the transition from childhood to adolescence and the beginning of separation from family orientation to peer relationships. The program at this point in time looks at rites of passage and what young people need in order to begin to “leave family”. The culmination of this stage is the Rite 13 ceremony, which acknowledges that the separation process has begun and the parish family agrees to take responsibility for the care and nurture of the youth who are making this journey.

The second two-year stage is called simply J2A. During this time the youth begin to learn what it means to be a community and work together. Again the four areas: self, social, sexual and spiritual - are looked at as the group learns how to become a community. At the end of year one in this stage the young people embark on an urban adventure. They will spend a weekend actually navigating through a strange environment and meet and deal with people who live entirely different lives than they are used to living. The second year in J2A is preparation for a pilgrimage. A pilgrimage is a journey to a holy place for the purpose of finding God or to be found by God.

After returning from pilgrimage the youth will be given the opportunity to make an adult commitment to God and the Christian community through the process of Confirmation. Most of the year will be spent in preparation for Confirmation. At the end of the year the group will be confirmed by the Bishop. At this point they are recognized as Young Adults in the Church (YAC).

During their last year in the program the youth focus on discipleship. They look at the models of discipleship and what it means in today’s world. At the end of this last year the group goes on a mission trip for at least a week and lives out their commitment as disciples.

This is a wonderful program that has a proven track record for keeping our youth involved in the life of the church. It works if the congregation supports it with its interest, financial backing and participation in various programs and activities. These young people are the Church of now and our successors for the future.

COMMITTEES AND HAPPENINGS

PLANNED GIVING – FIND TIME!  Ask yourself: Do you ever find time for the work of God?  Be a good steward and make the exciting discovery of time for yourself.  No matter how busy you think you are, you can find time if you try!  There is a wide choice of things which you can do for God and neighbor, in and through the Grace-Calvary community – if you have good will.  With good will you also will find the necessary time for such projects, even though you may have to cut and pare in other directions.

Workshop Cycles

The Workshop Cycles Sunday School class has recently concluded “Pray Without Ceasing-101 Ways to Pray”.  We talked about the many different ways to pray, and the children were introduced to a variety of prayer methods from other faith traditions.  We made prayer beads; we made our own Prayer Wall, much like the Wailing Wall of Jerusalem; we went on a quiet prayer walk.  With the guidance of Martha Hunter, the children experienced a Taizè service of icons, meditation, and sung prayer.  Becky Jackson taught them about the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of hanging prayer flags, and the children made their own prayer flags that are hanging in the Sunday School room.  They colored their own mandala prayer circles.  All in all, it was a wonderful experience.  We’d like to thank Martha Hunter and Becky Jackson for their wonderful contribution to this cycle.

We hope the children have enjoyed participating in Workshop Cycles this year, and we look forward to another great Sunday School year starting in the fall.  Have a wonderful summer!

We would like to express our appreciation to our Grace-Calvary family, the Daughters of the King, and all those who celebrated Richard’s life with us.  Thank you for your outpouring of love and support during our recent time of loss.
