Greetings From the Rector

The Reverend Dena S. Bearl

Beloved of Grace-Calvary,

One thing we can count on is change, even though we resist it greatly. A big change will take place in June here at Grace-Calvary. Jean Chance, our Parish Administrator, will be leaving us at the end of May. Her husband, Arnie, has accepted a new job in Abingdon, Virginia. Jean and Charlie will move after school is out, Jean’s last day being May 31st.

Jean has been with Grace-Calvary for six years. In those six years she has supported the ministries of two rectors and four interim priests. Amid the great variety of activities and ministries of the laypeople at Grace-Calvary, Jean has provided resources and assistance. She has worked tirelessly to establish a good financial/bookkeeping system for our growing parish. Jean is the kind of person who, if no one ever saw the results of her work, would still put forth her best efforts and expect excellence from herself. She has indeed been a blessing to this place!

In these six years, Jean has endeared herself to our parish, and will leave behind many folks who have become family to her. Jean wrote in her letter of resignation, “I take with me wonderful memories and the many lessons that you have taught me. Please pray for me and my family as we make this important move in our lives.”

Don said in his sermon at the Maundy Thursday service that people tend to have a hard time figuring out how to say goodbye…and that one way we handle it is to gather in fellowship around food. Sunday, May 20th, there will be a reception after the 8:30 am service in St. Julian Hall to honor Jean.

In Christ’s love,

RITES OF PASSAGE

Life is marked by milestones that signify transitions from one stage to the next. There are the first tentative steps, the first intelligible word, potty-trained (thank God!), etc. Some mile-markers are more important than others and these we look upon as life-changing and they are celebrated in various ways. I am involved in the preparations for graduation at Brenau University which take place in a few weeks. I am preaching at the Brenau Academy’s graduation Vespers Service and giving the Invocation and Benediction at the two major graduation services. Graduation from High School and College are major rites of passage and are marked by parties, trips and presents.

Marriage is another major milestone and marks a rite of passage that is signified by a legal document, the license, and a religious ceremony. For the woman it often is marked by a name change. This past weekend I officiated at the remarriage of two persons whose attendants were their teenage children!

One of the more traumatic rites of passage is adolescence. “Teenager” is a word that conjures fear in the hearts of many parents. Adolescence often is a time of volatile mood swings, demands for independence that are often counter-balanced by childlike dependency. In the middle of adolescence our society marks a rite of passage that is fraught with anxiety for every parent with any sense-the conferring of a driver’s license. We wouldn’t think of giving a teenager a loaded weapon, yet we give them a three thousand pound vehicle that will go far in excess of a hundred miles an hour! How do we instill responsibility?

Rite 13 is the first stage in our Journey to Adulthood program. Six of our Grace-Calvary youth have prepared for this rite of passage for the past two years. On May 6 they and their parents will stand before the congregation at the eleven o’clock service and acknowledge that the six youths are beginning their separation from their parents and are being entrusted to the larger community of faith for their continuing care and nurture. They will move from their places beside parents and sit with their peers and advisors. We will pray for the parents who are beginning to “let go”, for the teens who “growing up” and the Church who will guide them on their journey to adulthood. We will rejoice with them in celebration of the event and continue to pray and watch over them. Adulthood is not automatically conferred, but rather it is earned and the parish is an essential part of that process.

COMMITTEES AND HAPPENINGS

A CHURCH IS LIKE A TREE

A church is like a tree, and its members are like leaves.  Without their constant donations of time, talent and treasure, the church will soon suffer and may not survive.  However, with careful stewardship, the church will flourish.  And a healthy church, like a healthy tree, will benefit others as a source of food, shelter and inspiration.  Remember this as you decide how you can provide your time, talent and resources to make the Grace-Calvary “tree” flourish.

THE ENGLISH TEA benefitting Foothills Counseling Center will be held Saturday, May 12, from 3:00 - 5:00 pm, on the lawn of Grace-Calvary Episcopal Church in Clarkesville. This lovely event is held the day before Mother’s Day.  Sunday dress and hats add to the atmosphere of an afternoon tea in an English garden.  You are invited to come with family and friends and enjoy being served tea, scones, finger sandwiches and treats.  There will be wonderful items for raffles as well as a prize for the most elegant hat and table.  In case of rain it will be held in St. Julian Hall at Grace-Calvary.  Tickets are $20.00 each and may be purchased by contacting Cynthia Johnston at 706-969-1227 or at the Grace-Calvary office at 706-754-22451.

Please join us for this delightful afternoon tea and to support the good works of Foothills Counseling.

Tuesday Morning Bible Study

The Tuesday Morning Bible Study will have a Worship Service on May 15, 2007 at 11 am in St. Julian Hall.  We will celebrate another year of dedication to the study of Scriptures which included Joshua and Job.  The service will include a short presentation of a play based on Job’s puzzling search for answers about God and the Mystery that finally speaks to him.

Please join us for this service.  Questions?  Call Graham at 706-754-8382.
