Greetings From the Rector

The Reverend Dena S. Bearl

Beloved of Grace-Calvary,

November is here! Hard to believe! Leaves changing and falling… first fires in fireplaces… the last of the summer flowers gone with the first frost…the month of Thanksgiving…and the time we begin to brace ourselves for that season of crowded stores and full parking lots…the shopping season.

Many of our members have expressed their determination to simplify this season and to participate less in its commercial frenzy. A wise and practical resolve! We can add to our list in November…more time for family and friends…less stuff to return to the stores after Christmas…less stuff, period…less debt on our credit cards…more room to prepare for one of the holiest days celebrated in the Church. November is getting more attractive by the minute!

There is a sense, though, that something would be missing without gifts at Christmas - not so much that the receiving of piles of gifts would be mourned; but, that we have a real desire to give at this time of year. I think deep down, at least I hope so, that especially at this time of year, it’s natural for people to express their thanks in tangible ways. Be it thanks for full crops and enough food for the winter or joy and wonder of God’s gift of Jesus to the world – it is a season brimming with thankful feelings. And when our thankfulness overflows, we want to give and to celebrate.

One of many alternatives for giving gifts is to help the needy in honor of a person you would usually go shopping for. Heifer International and Gifts for Life by Episcopal Relief and Development are great options. Through these ministries you can purchase anything from a flock of chickens to seeds for planting to vitamins to mosquito nets to bees to buffalos! A man from Thailand is quoted: ‘If I die, my family will weep for me. If my buffalo dies, my family will starve.’ These gifts will definitely not be lost in a closet or returned for credit!

Look for catalogs on the information table in St. Julian Hall – and have a fun shopping spree that will changes people’s lives.

In Christ’s love,

MOTHER THERESA: SAINT OR SINNER

As I write this we are only a week away from celebrating one of the great feast daysin the life of the Christian Church,  All  Saints Day.  The word “Saint” has come tomean “holy or consecrated”, “a person who is exceptionally meek, charitable, patient, etc.” (Webster’s New World College Dictionary). The Church has conferred that title on the great luminaries of the faith  such as  the disciples, Church Fathers, or  those  men and women whose piety is well known and to whom at least two  miracles  are attributed. Currently the Roman Catholic Church is in the process of  elevating the late John Paul and Mother Theresa to sainthood. Imagine then, the consternation of the Church authorities when the content of Mother Theresa’s letters and diary were recently revealed. It seems that Mother Theresa suffered from what classic theologians call “the dark night of the soul”. During much of her life the good nun felt deserted by God and believed she was spiritually bankrupt. Day after day she went about taking care of the poorest of the poor, the sickest of the sick, feeling utterly alone and deserted by the God in whose service she labored year after year. That picture doesn’t fit our usual definition of a saint very well, does it? Either Mother Theresa is a fraud or our definition is inadequate.

Paul, that great “saint” of the early church, addressed the recipients of his letters as “saints”. Given the frightful state of the church in Corinth, for instance, Paul must have meant something other than one’s piety. Indeed, it would appear that a “saint” was one who was a member of the community of faith and who remained steadfast in that community regardless of the circumstances. That being the case, it seems to me that endurance is the hallmark of sainthood. Mother Theresa “hung in there” in spite of her doubts and feelings of abandonment. Paul Tillich, the great Protestant theologian, once said that if you raised any of the Christian virtues to their highest degree, they would be indistinguishable from courage. Endurance is based on courage and Mother Theresa was indeed courageous.

So, to all you who “hang in there” in the community of faith welcome to sainthood!

COMMITTEES AND HAPPENINGS

Our initial planning session for a Festival Weekend Event saw a turnout of nearly twenty people who enjoyed wine and hors d'oeuvres, enthusiastic conversation, numerous suggestions, and a willingness to volunteer their help. We agreed that it would take at least a year for us to plan and get organized. We tentatively looked to the fall of 2008, but some made a good argument for a springtime event. We agreed to focus on our heritage as a church and as a community, insist on the quality of art and music, food and entertainment.

Since that meeting I have had serious conversations with several people in the music and entertainment world who have agreed to help us. It is time to get organized and find out who really wants to see this event come about. There is a table in St. Julian's Hall that has some sign-up sheets with the names of those who committed their services the night of the meeting. I invite you to sign one or more of those sheets so that we can begin forming our committees. If you have questions or need more information call me at the church office or e-mail him at donrev35@bellsouth.net.

You have probably noticed framed photographs of past rectors of Grace-Calvary in St. Julian Hall. Be looking for three more which are being framed:

The Rev. Nat Massey 1967-1968

The Rev. Dann Brown 1998-2000

On November 4, we will have a children's liturgy in the church.  This liturgy will be a celebration of All Saints Day and each child will represent a particular saint.  We hope all the children can be there.  As before, we will meet in the Sunday school room and process to the church.  It is important for them to be in class on October 28, as this is when we will decide who will be what saint, etc. November 4 is also First Sunday Breakfast.  If you plan on having breakfast, can you come a little earlier to eat, so we can start on time, or as close to "on time" as possible?

2008 Pledge Ingathering

Ingathering of pledges for 2008 will be Sunday, November 11.  Please return your pledge card in the mail or in the offering plate by that day.

The total goal for the campaign is $317,000, the amount of the budget requests made by the various committees of the parish.  The total requested amount is an increase of about $25,000 (8.6%) over 2007.  Of that increase $14,400 is made up of increases requested for the Outreach Committee ($7400/43%); Christian Formation, including the Youth Program ($4300/50%); and Worship, including Music ($2700/58%).

Please make your pledge remembering all that God has given to and for you; what this parish means to you; and what together we can do by joyfully and generously responding to this call.

UTO Ingathering- Sunday, November 18

The Annual United Thank Offering Ingathering will be Sunday November 18th at both services.  Throughout the year Grace-Calvary members continue to save their spare change in the little "blue boxes" to show expressions of gratitude and thankfulness.  Those tokens are gathered together and sent on to help UTO carry out its mission which is to expand the circle of thankful people.  To achieve this mission we encourage daily prayers, offerings, and awareness of the abundance of God's blessings.  Every penny of your thank offering goes to support grants for ministries at home and overseas.

More about UTO or extra "blue boxes" or envelopes can be found on the information table in St. Julian Hall. -Becky Jackson
