Greetings From the Rector

The Reverend Dena S. Bearl

Beloved of Grace-Calvary,

Rooted in faith, built up in love, abounding in thanksgiving…..you will

see these words this month in several places. They are a paraphrase of the

following verse:

As you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him,

rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. [Colossians 2:7]

I remember a woman from years ago who received a priceless gift in the hallway of a hospital. A surgeon came out and assured her that her son would survive the car accident he had been in. She at that moment could not have stopped the joy and thanksgiving that was flowing out of her. She hugged the surgeon and her family members and found that she deeply desired to pour blessings on every person in the waiting room. When she left the hospital later, she saw a person, obviously poor, sitting on a bench near the front door. She was compelled to give him something and pressed a ten dollar bill into his hand.

Many of us have had such an experience - feelings of joy and thanksgiving that compel our generosity and cause us to see the world differently, at least for a little while.

Like the verse from Colossians, the apostle Paul describes this kind of feeling over and over in his letters to the churches. It is evident that when people hear and reflect upon the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, God is revealed. And this changes peoples’ perspective – changes peoples’ lives! And the response is always the same: joy and thanksgiving overflowing in abundance. And this changes the world.

Our joy and thanksgiving don’t have to be momentary. If we are rooted in faith and built up from a foundation of God’s love, our joy and thanksgiving need not fade. It is from this place that gratitude overflows. We offer it in whatever form we can that will join to the Church’s ongoing work to reveal God to the world as God as been revealed to us.

In this season of gathering our joy and thanksgiving and returning it to God, may we steward it wisely, generously, and…

In Christ’s love,

FESTIVAL PLANNING UNDERWAY

On September 18th,  twenty folks gathered in St. Julian’s Hall for wine and hors d’oeuvres and

some creative brainstorming around the idea of a festival weekend. Don Harrison started the

discussion by explaining that we are at a unique time in our life together at Grace-Calvary. We

are about to pay off our parish hall indebtedness which will leave us debt free, but with limited

reserves. We need to provide an on-going endowment for the preservation of our historic church

building and anticipate future growth needs. In addition, we have undertaken the Journey to

Adulthood youth program and every two years we will need to help finance a Youth Pilgrimage.

These commitments will require funds that exceed our capabilities to raise them solely among our own members. A festival that involves the entire community and visitors from the surrounding area would help us to promote the history of our community, the uniqueness of Grace-Calvary Church, and provide for our future obligations.

We had an open discussion of what such a festival would look like. John Kollock was very helpful in relating past events that had taken place in the community and what lessons had been learned from those experiences. It was generally agreed that we were interested in quality, particularly in the area of the arts, and that we included painting and photographic arts, music, and drama. We needed to focus on the history of our community and the role and uniqueness of Grace-Calvary in relation to it. We discussed a Friday night concert and reception in the church, an all-day series of events on Saturday with various types of entertainment and food, including an old-fashioned pig roast. At this point nothing has been decided for certain other than the decision to move forward with planning and getting organized.

We discussed the various committees we would need to bring such an undertaking to fruition and we asked the people present to sign up for one or more committees. These sign-up lists will be posted in St. Julian’s Hall and everybody is asked to commit to one or more activities. Once this has been done each committee will meet, choose a chairperson and begin planning. We’re waiting on you!

Peace,

UTO Ingathering- Sunday, November 18

The Annual United Thank Offering Ingathering will be Sunday November 18th at both services.  Throughout the year Grace-Calvary members continue to save their spare change in the little "blue boxes" to show expressions of gratitude and thankfulness.  Those tokens are gathered together and sent on to help UTO carry out its mission which is to expand the circle of thankful people.  To achieve this mission we encourage daily prayers, offerings, and awareness of the abundance of God's blessings.  Every penny of your thank offering goes to support grants for ministries at home and overseas.

More about UTO or extra "blue boxes" or envelopes can be found on the information table in St. Julian Hall.
