Greetings From the Rector

The Reverend Dena S. Bearl

Beloved,

Well, the season has finally come back ‘round… for Sunday School and football! At least those are two things  that come to mind! I  think for now I’d better stick with Sunday School…or on a larger scale…Christian Formation.

In Eat This Book, Eugene H. Peterson writes: Christians feed on Scripture. Holy Scripture nurtures the holy community as food nurtures the human body. Christian don’t simply learn or study or use Scripture; we assimilate it, take it into our lives in such a way that it gets metabolized into acts of love, cups of cold water, missions into all the world, healing and evangelism and justice in Jesus’ name, hands raised in adoration of the Father, feet washed in company with the Son.

When you think about it, whether it’s classes on contemporary topics, our worship services, our ministries, or our personal devotion, pretty much all that we undertake in our formation as Christians, draws at some level from Scripture either directly or from others’ engagement with it.

As the days get shorter and, hopefully, cooler, I invite you to be newly intentional in one or more of these four ways of feeding on Scripture:

Christian Education Classes: You will see a yellow Christian Formation brochure in this edition of the Mustard Seed. There are Sunday morning classes for every age, with three choices of classes for adults, plus other classes and activities.

Worship: Every worship service - Holy Eucharist, the Wednesday Healing service, and our monthly Taize service – are steeped in Scripture. As you worship, let the words spoken and sung nurture you. Pick one phrase to repeat and meditate on through the week. Read the lectionary readings, posted in the Mustard Seed, before and after Sunday, so that you can really chew on them and get the most out of them.

Ministries: Our ministries and organizations are founded on Jesus’ example of teaching, healing, mercy, and justice. And, as they say, ‘it is easier to act your way into a new way of thinking than to think your way into a new way of acting.’  Find a way to be involved that will assimilate your life into the way of Christ.

Personal time: Even twenty minutes a day given to prayer, reading, thoughtful reflection, (and singing, to...it’s the reason showers were invented) can become a familiar and restorative part of your day.

Many thanks to all of the teachers and leaders in our congregation that make these opportunities possible!

In Christ’s love,

“LEAVING CHURCH”

No, this isn’t about Barbara Taylor’s book! Last week I was in the

mountains for a few days thinking that it would be cooler and I

could get in some trout fishing. Unfortunately, the streams are drying

up and the fish are dying from the heat. I spent a lot of time in our

air-conditioned cabin catching up on my reading. My wife always

hauls with us a stack of back issue newspapers that she hasn’t gotten around to reading. When she comes across an article that she thinks would interest me she lays it aside for my edification. That’s how I happen to read of a USA Today poll of young men and women who have given up on church. The poll showed that nearly 40% of the 18-35 year olds have left the organized church. The causes vary, but most felt that the Church they grew up in was irrelevant. In my own family I watched my children leave the organized institutional church, at least for awhile. They grew up when it was still the practice to exclude children from communion until they were confirmed at about the age of twelve or thirteen. Both of my children went to Sunday school until the time for Confirmation. I remember my son saying after Confirmation, “I’ve graduated!” The children continued to go to church as long as they were at home, but when they went to college Sunday morning was reserved for recovering from Saturday night.

One of the best things that has happened in the field of Christian Education in the Episcopal Church is the Journey to Adulthood program. It postpones Confirmation and focuses on retaining the youth in a close-knit group throughout high school. The curriculum is specifically designed to address adolescent issues of self, scalability, sexuality and spirituality. In the fourth year of the program there is a year-long preparation for pilgrimage and the journey to a sacred place. It is only after the pilgrimage that Confirmation is addressed as an adult commitment of faith. What is interesting to observe is when the “graduates” of this program return from college for holidays, they seek out one another and they are seen in worship and they are there because they want to be there. If we create community first, then faith will follow.

                                                                             Peace,

COMMITTEES AND HAPPENINGS

Daughters of the King

We are an order of women who commit to prayer, service, and evangelism. In September eleven women of Grace-Calvary will be preparing for admission into the Order. If others wish to consider this ministry, please contact Tricia Pugh at 706-865-3345 for more information.

Tuesday Morning Bible Study begins September 4th
10-11:30 am in Saint Julian Hall
"Farsighted Visions of the Future"

Our study will begin with an overview of the Old Testament and then set our sights on Ezra and Nehemiah. These were men whose farsighted vision helped the rebuilding of Jerusalem, its walls and Temple, and the reinventing of Judaism itself after the exile. Please join us for this exciting study.  Call Graham at 706-754-8382 with any questions.

Building & Grounds would like to thank the following people who did a wonderful job of painting trim, ceilings and walls in the Parish office building. Ray Rowell, Jack Grimes, Frank McCann, Roy Bruner, Mike Short, Russell Johnson, Bill Johnson, Jim Owens, Pat Molnar, Carole McCollum, Jim McCollum and Dena.  The crew painted the Parish Administrator’s office, the hallway to Dena’s office, the front office, the foyer and the kitchen.  The trip hazard in the sidewalk to the SJH Undercroft was also ground down. Special thanks goes out to Dena, Pat and Terri Todd for providing lunch and refreshments on both days, and to Jim and Carole McCollum for donating the wall paint.

MEN OF GRACE

The Men of Grace recently enjoyed an evening of food and fellowship, as well as becoming acquainted with newer members of our Parish.   We just “kicked back” and engaged in lively conversation while devouring Frank McCann’s delicious offerings from the grill.

The highlight of the night was John Cantwell’s description of his and Rosann’s trip and work with the “Amigos of Christ” in Nicaragua.  It was a life changing experience for them.

Some of our local service projects include recent completion of painting several rooms in the Parish House, continuing work on the Habersham County Greenway Trail, construction of interior walls of the Art and Craft building at Camp Mikell and upcoming, demolition and salvage of a wood bridge at Unicoi Park and reassembly on the trail over the creek near Clarkesville Mill.  All of the men are invited to participate. You’ll enjoy the activities - Promise. Oh! One more thing: there are still downed trees to be sawed and split for firewood at Camp Mikell. Let’s tackle that project when the weather cools.

Just A Taste Once Again a Success

On the night of August 11th St. Julian Hall was once again transformed for ECW’s Just A Taste – a special evening that showcased the culinary talents of Grace-Calvary’s members. Guests were treated to delicious appetizers, desserts and wines.  Also, a Silent Auction was held featuring one-of-a-kind birdhouses artistically and creatively designed and decorated by Grace-Calvary children, youth & adults.  Additional service-related items were offered as well.

Many thanks go out to all that planned, decorated and set-up, prepared food, served food and wine, emceed, decorated birdhouses, donated services, and cleaned up after the event.  If you bought a ticket or an auction item, you were an important part of the success of the evening, too.  The evening raised around $3000 to help support ECW’s many activities throughout the year.

A few recipe collection sets from 2005 and 2006 are still available for sale.  The cost is $10 per set, and they are available in the church office.
