Greetings From the Rector

The Reverend Dena S. Bearl

Beloved of Grace-Calvary,

Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of

the faithful. This first verse of Psalm 149 is very appropriate as a theme

for us. There is much to praise God for as several ‘new songs’ are taking

place.

Your vestry is beginning this new year with three new members: Barrie Aycock, John Cantwell, and Russell Johnson. Our new senior warden is Kathy O’Keefe and our new junior warden is Eph Davis. Also serving on the vestry are John Andrews, Clair Langmaid, Dave Lewis, Susan Smith, and Jimie Yearwood. The Rev. Gray Temple led our vestry retreat which focused on the importance of listening for God’s guidance and listening to each other as the vestry carries on the business of the parish.

You’ll notice a new look in our church. New carpet has been installed and more of the pine floor is exposed. We are grateful to Tommy Walker for seeing a need and enthusing others to meet that need. (The old faded red carpet with its stains and drips from candle wax served us well for 25 years.) Tommy, Eddy Ariail, and the Daphne & Murray Foundation, contacted by Don Harrison, met the need financially. Les Parsons, John Cantwell, John Moss, Rob Aycock and the Altar Guild took care of all the steps necessary to have the floor refinished – removing all the kneelers, protecting the organ, stacking and covering all the books, cleaning, and many other details. Thanks to everyone for this work of love and labor for our worship space.

Our shutters will not be new, but they are being professionally restored so that they can last another century. Thanks to David Greene and Les Parsons for their thorough research and recommendations to the vestry.

And, a new computer system is replacing our antiquated computers through the efforts of Bill Gresham to raise the necessary funds.

All of these endeavors are wonderful additions and improvements at Grace-Calvary. And, as we make sure that our buildings and our business are in good order, let’s not ever forget what should determine everything we do – to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to reach out in love to those in need.

Sing to the Lord a new song in the assembly of the faithful!

In Christ’s love,

LENT 2008: “WE HAVE COME”

On my first residency at St. George’s College in Jerusalem, we visited the excavations under the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. This is the church that Constantine’s mother commissioned to be built over the tomb of Jesus. The archaeologists had discovered on a wall the drawing of a small, single-masted boat, pulled up on the shore. The mast was broken and the oars were left in the boat. The inscription read, “We have come.” It is believed that the painting is

the work of first century pilgrims who came to Golgotha and the Tomb to worship.

It is not an accident that early church architecture used the ship as a model for worship space. The place where people gather is called the “nave”, the Latin word for ship or boat. This Lent we are going to focus on “worship space” or what constitutes “sacred space”. Our leader on this “pilgrimage” is eminently qualified. Garland Reynolds, Jr. has designed and built numerous churches of various denominations, including Grace Episcopal in Gainesville and Holy Family in Jasper, Ga. He is a graduate of Georgia Tech and serves as the President of the Committee for the College of Architecture. He holds numerous positions regionally and nationally and we welcome him to Grace-Calvary.

Lent is about pilgrimage and worship and sacred space. We will gather on Wednesday evenings for a simple meal and program and close with worship Come journey with us to holy places, remembering that the final destination is often not as important as the journey itself.

The Mustard Seed is undergoing a redesign. We hope to unveil the new look in March. Please e-mail mustardseednewsletter@windstream.net with your ideas and suggestions.

Thanks for your patience and support as we continue refining our methods of communication.

The J2A Group will retreat to Camp Mikell on February 15-17. This was a big hit last year and an investment is required by the parish in terms of money and prayer. Please offer your prayers for our youth as they prepare their hearts and minds for the weekend of diocesan fellowship. Mother Dena and Bryant Tench will provide the leadership for this time away.

The J2A Urban Adventure is on the calendar for June 12-15, 2008. Stay tuned for further details about this culminating event. The destination is inner-city Jacksonville, Florida with Sue Carmichael scheduled to host our J2A members and chaperones.

Movie Night January 2008

“Dead Poet’s Society”

Editor’s Note: I thought I’d share an e-mail I received from David Todd…elg

Dear Lane:

Just a note to let you I was glad that you and I were both able to witness/eavesdrop on the discussion that our J2A group was having last Saturday night. As you know they had just viewed the movie, The Dead Poets Society, as part of their J2A curriculum. They gathered at the Parish House to eat pizza & watch the movie (and have fun). I slipped in just as the discussion began. Bryant Tench and Matt Mclurg led the group in a fantastic soul searching discussion about the story they had just viewed. As I told you Saturday night, I wish everyone at Grace-Calvary could have seen our students and their teachers talking about this movie and how it relates to their spiritual growth. You could almost see these young people grow before your eyes! This group appears so comfortable with each other and their teachers. I think it is a result of the commitment their teachers have given them for almost two years now. Matt, Kim, Bryant (with Eph’s support) are having a huge impact on this group and might not even realize to what extent! Grace-Calvary should understand the fabulous ministry this group of teachers is doing each Sunday! To make sure that the next group of kids that come through this program get this kind of mentoring , we should reach out to our Grace-Calvary family and see if there are people who want to make kind of impact on some of God’s children right under our own roof here at Grace-Calvary .

Peace,

David Todd

What’s New on the Horizon

Back in September of last year the Horizon Committee, after many months of talking to committees and other groups and gathering information, presented its initiatives (goals) to the parish.  These initiatives not only reflected what was currently being done, but also the things that the people of Grace-Calvary wanted to see happen in the next five years.

Now five months later, below is a sampling of what has been accomplished thus far:

Christian Formation – A catechetical class is being planned that will delve deeper into the meaning of the Eucharist, the Liturgy, its connection to the early Church and its Anglican tradition.  Intergenerational activities have been implemented and many more are planned for the immediate future.  The children and youth department continue to become more and more involved in programs (see letter from David Todd), and parishioners have gone on a ‘field trip’ to Atlanta to see the exhibit of archeological artifacts from the time of Christ.

Building & Grounds – The floors of the sanctuary have been refinished and stained, and new carpet installed.  The shutters are being restored and the pews given a ‘face-lift’, as well as restoring the chancel to its original form.  Most of the cost for these improvements came from generous hearts and a lot of ‘sweat equity.’  The Parish House has been painted on the inside, and the kitchen has received a new countertop and floor – again, from donations of money, supplies and labor.  The office has two new computers, which were made possible by many donors, with compatible, updated software and enhanced storage, as well as an external hard drive which will further protect against data loss.  On the grounds, a beautiful memorial garden was planted by the children, and several trees have been removed which were considered a threat for falling.

Parish Life & Worship – a database of talents has been started that will enable the identification of future volunteers.  A children’s choir has begun, and two additional nursery workers were added. A Fall Festival is being planned to expose the community to our historic campus.

Heritage – Photos of past rectors of Grace-Calvary have been obtained, framed and hung in St. Julian Hall.  The tedious task of scanning and storing irreplaceable historic documents is in progress, and a register of gifts is being created.

Communications & Newcomers – The bulletin board in St. Julian Hall has been revamped and updated (would anyone like to take this on as their ministry?), and a new visitor’s brochure and packet has been designed and put together.

And, finally, the mortgage has been burned!

These are just a few of the many exciting things that are taking shape here at Grace-Calvary.  We are alive and moving forward, and we will keep you updated on all the progress.
