Greetings From the Rector
The Reverend Dena S. Bearl † Beloved
of Grace-Calvary, With Memorial Day just
past, summer is officially here! Many in our parish have the summer months of
their calendars marked already with plans to head to the coast or to take wonderful
adventures to far away places or to entertain family and friends who will head for these foothills. As I thought about
our travels, I looked into our red guest registry that people sign when they visit Grace-Calvary. |
||
|
This year we have
had visitors from many places on Sundays
and during the week including: Florida - Ft. Lauderdale,
St. Petersburg, West Palm Beach, Titusville Maryland - Lanham Alabama - Arab,
Opelika Texas - Houston North Carolina -
Hillsborough, Murphy Wisconsin -
Milwaukee Ohio - Cincinnati Kentucky –
Lexington, Hardin Virginia -
Waynesboro Many places in
Georgia…and Norwich, England It made me smile to
think that people from all these places – and probably many more folks who
didn’t stop to sign the registry – have come into our sacred space to worship
or to visit the historic building. I know that whenever I have traveled and
gone into churches, especially when they are empty, their space breathes with
the worship and history that have taken
place within those walls. And, of course, it makes me smile to know that when
visitors have ventured up to our front door, they have found it unlocked as a
sign of welcome. For those of you who
will travel this summer, if you wander into a church, or attend worship,
please bring back bulletins or photos to share. We’ll put them on our
bulletin board for everyone to enjoy. In Christ’s love,

Writing
for Well-Being: Heal,
Change or Grow More
than one hundred studies published in such reliable journals s Journal of
the American Medical Association, New England Journal of Medicine and Journal
of Consulting and Clinical Psychology support the thesis that writing can
be powerfully therapeutic for the body and mind. This workshop will be an introduction to
using writing as a way to heal, change, and/or grow. You will determine your
own goals, such as: writing the body, healing from a traumatic event, ransitioning from one stage of life to
another, developing a deeper knowledge of self, finding home, writing your
story, earning self-care, tapping your
creativity You decide. Materials needed: pens, pencils, colored pencils, 3
ring binder 1 ½”, loose-leaf paper, dividers, and sketch paper. You may also
use a bound journal if you like. Dr.
Hodgens has more than 30 years experience teaching writing. She has
experience with the Ira Progoff journal writing method, the Kathleen Adams
Journal to Self method, and many others. She is Professor of English (in
journal writing, grammar and spelling do not count!) at Piedmont College and
former editor of the Habersham Review. Monday evenings 7:00-8:30 Cedar Heights Center 799 Washington St. Clarkesville, GA 30523 (706) 754-1961 lhodgens@cedarheightscenter.com www.cedarheightscenter.com |

Cursillo Recently, three of our Grace Calvary members attended a Cursillo weekend. For those of you who don’t know, the word “Cursillo” means “little course” in Spanish. I guess it is called little because it only lasts three days but in terms of spirituality - it is huge. The three people who attended were Carole McCollum, Sandy Robson and Billye Runion. Their experience began on a Thursday evening in Camp Fortson, south of Atlanta. They, of course, were very curious beforehand as to what to expect of the weekend and they asked many questions. The answers probably seemed vague to them, only because any description that could be given would fall short of the mark. Cursillo is not something to be described but something to be experienced. A group of supporters from Grace Calvary met them at the camp on Sunday afternoon and were rewarded by the joy that radiated with each of them from their experience of the weekend. If you are at all curious, talk to these three people. They will share their thoughts with enthusiasm. Cursillo is best described as Love: God’s love for you, your love for God, and your love of one another. The weekend is an experience of this love. If you are interested in attending a Cursillo weekend, please let Dena know. Also, if you have attended a Cursillo weekend, please be sure that Dena is aware of this as we are forming new “Group Reunions” and having periodic Ultreyas .
News and Events A
Tribute to Don Burroughs I had the pleasure of meeting Don Borroughs through Lay Pastoral Care only a year or so ago. Having become acquainted with him, I found myself somewhat envious of many of you who were blessed by knowing him for so much longer than I. Most of you will already know the story of Don’s service to our c o u n t r y dur i n g WWII:his landing on Normandy each on June 6, 1944 in the first wave; his subsequent wounding in the late afternoon of that first day; his rescue by a fellow corpsman who carried him to Utah Beach, from where he was evacuated. Don never knew who his rescuer was until he, Noreen and granddaughter Mariellen attended his first 6th Beach Battalion reunion. Don, by a “chance” God happening, met the man who had carried him from the beach on that fateful day. He was also reunited with his best friend and shipmate, whose life he had saved and with whom he had lost contact. Indeed, most of you will also know that Don volunteered to be reassigned to the Pacific Theater, arriving on Iwo Jimo in February of 1945, just two weeks after that bloody invasion. After receiving the Purple Heart and being discharged, he then had an impressive career as an educator in Miami and became known as the man who brought harmony to the school system in Dade County during the turbulent years of desegregation. Somehow, through all these years, he made the time to fulfill his primary role in life, that of a dedicated husband to Noreen (58 years), father to four wonderful children, and grandfather to seven grandchildren. I am in awe of a life so well lived. What I want to share with you are two stories you may not know. The first is of how he and Noreen game to be “an item”. It was in Psychology 101 at Stetson University, Deland, Florida that Don’s path crossed that of Noreen. Noreen sat on one side of the large lecture hall while Don sat on the opposite side. She was attracted to Don’s quiet and kind demeanor and decided she wanted to “catch his attention”. She devised a plan, in which each day she and her girlfriend would move two seats closer to where Don sat. Being a large lecture hall, this process took awhile, but Noreen never wavered. Finally, “east met west” --- and Don’s fate was sealed. One of the principal social activities on campus was the hayride. Don told me he was usually the driver, while Noreen rode in the back. He had to take matters into his own hands, and so demanded that someone else drive so that he would sit in the back with Noreen. Evidently they “made hay while the sun shone” and were married on September 25, 1948. Shortly before Don died he was in a nursing home in Clayton. One day a group came to led the residents in a singing. One particular song they sang greatly affected Don and he tried to tell the group of his experience. Being unable to make himself understood, the next day he took pen to paper and wrote the following. “I wanted to tell a story at the end of 'Wednesday. I’m afraid that you didn’t her me or that you thought I wanted to brag about my getting the Purple Heart. What I wanted to tell the group was a story I promised God I would tell each time that I got the opportunity. It came to me after we finished singing, “I won’t tell the world about war anymore”. “I was in the navy attached to the army during the invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach June 6th, 1944. I was 19 years old; I was wounded on the first afternoon. A sailor lying next to me picked me up and carried me to the next beach – at that time there were no more boats landing on Omaha Beach. I was carried out by a small boat to a larger ship. There I was, lying in the deck waiting to be treated. I looked next to me and there was a German prisoner lying next to me. We looked at each other, our eyes met. He was praying for me and I was praying for him. We were brothers… even though I knew he was trying to kill me. I was a hospital corpsman, so I wasn’t trying to kill him. But we were brothers for that moment and I will teach war no more.” Praise God for Don’s example to us of how to live life well. Vitamin Drive A most humble thanks... I would like to thank everyone at Grace Calvary who helped with the vitamin drive. We collected generous bounty through individual contributions and as well as a generous grant from the Outreach Committee. I am always amazed and humbled by the generous spirit of Grace-Calvary. Foothills
Counseling Center under new leadership It is with great pleasure that I will be leading Foothills
Counseling Center in the role of Director. After holding executive positions
in the technology industry and part-time volunteer endeavors, I look forward
to transferring this knowledge and continuing to build upon Foothill's successes and introducing
new growth channels. As of May 6th, we have changed our existing model to
include child services and have brought on-board a licensed child therapist,
Karen Savrin. Karen comes to us with 23 years of therapy experience for
children and adults. Foothills has been a vibrant, dedicated organization to
both Grace Calvary parishioners and the Northeast Georgia community. The
entire staff of Foothills gives great thanks to Grace Calvary and Rev. Dena
Bearl for supporting our efforts. I look forward to growing and continuing
our liaison relationship with Grace Calvary into the future. If Foothills Counseling Center can be of assistance or
support to you or someone you know, please call us directly at 706-754-5155.

GA 30577 PILGRIMAGE
TO SPAIN THIS FALL EL
CAMINO DE SANTIAGO The Camino de Santiago is an ancient Christian Pilgrimage route located in Northern Spain. The route was first walked by the Bishop of Le Puy, France in 961. For more than 1,000 years, Christians have traced the footsteps of Saint James (Santiago). Dr. Stan Beecham will lead a group of 12 pilgrims this fall (September 17 –October 2) and invites you to join him. This 16 day trip will consist of 12 days of walking the Camino, averaging 25 kilometers (15 miles) each day. The group will fly non-stop from Atlanta to Madrid. We will then travel by rail to Leon, where our pilgrimage begins. Twelve days and 200 miles later, the group will arrive in Santiago de Compostela. After spending a day in Santiago, we will fly back to Madrid for a day of leisure and then to Atlanta the following day. The cost of the trip is $2,800 (includes: all travel, lodging, pre-trip preparation). Pilgrims will be responsible for the cost of their meals ($20-25 day). If you are interested and want to learn more, all Dr. Stan Beecham at 770-262-5556
Refrigerator Needed For Grace Gate Barbara Grant from Grace Gate delivered a presentation to the Outreach Committee during the May meeting. Grace Gate is a faith based, part-time free clinic in Habersham County which provides medical care to patients with no medical insurance. Many local doctors donate their time and services to Grace Gate. They have a case load of 800 and are currently serving 200 active patients. Grace Gate does not provide trauma care but primarily treats patients with chronic illnesses. When asked what their most urgent need was, Barbara told us that they needed a refrigerator to store medical supplies requiring refrigeration. Godly Play has need
for three women’s long-sleeve blouses
– never to be returned - to be used as
covers for little ones’ Sunday
clothes as they enjoy art activities. Please drop them
off in the church office. Thanks, Billye Runion Appreciation

of the Northeast Georgia Arts Tour 2008,
Sheri Kling will be performing a “coffeehouse concert” at Grace Calvary at 7
p.m.. Tickets are $12 and are available at the church. Coffee, teas and
desserts will be available. You

Sunday, May 18th was full of activity. Children planted
flowers and sang songs of springtime; trucks filled with tables, tents and
picnic supplies headed to Demorest Springs Park; graduating seniors shared insights
from their spiritual journey and received the blessing of the parish; and
Kathleen Johnson regaled the congregation with the “inside” scoop on the young adults she has been shepherding since they were in
the fourth grade. To top it all off, John Andrews showed off his saddle
oxfords.
Tony “Valentine” Woronowski lives up to his name;
celebrates 50 years with his lifetime sweetheart Anthony and Florence Woronowski were married on June 7, 1958 at St. John the Baptist Church in Alden, New York. They have three daughters: Annie, Mary and Laura and seven grandchildren.
Urban Adventure!! J2A pilgrims head to inner-city Jacksonville, FL On June 10 our teenagers will pile into a van and
head to Jacksonville, Florida for five days. While staying at St. Mary’s
Episcopal Outreach Mission –definitely an urban setting! – they will have
many new experiences. They will spend a day working with the homeless.
They will attend worship services in several settings: Muslim, Jewish, Baptist (African-American), St.
Mary’s Mission, and St. John’s Cathedral. Bible study and journaling,
preparing their meals together, and learning to work as a group to navigate
themselves through a large city are part of the challenges of the trip. And,
there’s a beach nearby and plenty of fun things to do if spare time allows! Please pray for our youths and their adult support
team as they embark on this adventure: Grace Donnelly, Joseph Gresham, Zack
Perry, David James Todd Walker Whited, Dena Bearl, Matt McClurg, Billye
Runion, Bryant Tench, Walker Whited and David Todd. <hr size=3 width="100%"
