Greetings From the Rector

The Reverend Dena S. Bearl

Beloved of Grace-Calvary,

Holding a dirty little St. Joseph statue in my hand the other day caused me to reflect back on the past year and a half of my life. It was then that the FOR SALE sign went up and the legendary statue got buried in my front yard. The sign and the statue were symbolic of a decision I had made to rebalance my life. Then, while I was holding my breath for the sale to happen, dust and weeds (a sure sign that life does go on) began to appear upon the perfectly prepared interior and lawn. And I figured  that I had better pay attention and get back into that reality. If we haven’t really lived this day, what do we take with us into tomorrow?

After some time went by, I joked that I would find myself in the same house until I was ancient, with the FOR SALE sign still out front. But, behind the jovial remarks, I wondered what people do when they make decisions they believe are sound – and nothing seems to cooperate.

Perhaps, they think, not even God. The house doesn’t sell even if it would mean better stewardship of time, energy, and money would be possible. The cancer doesn’t go away even when the best treatment is found. The truth doesn’t win the day even if it has been upheld in the most honorable way. Of course we want good to come from our decisions, especially our difficult ones.

The greatest heroes and saints I can think of are those people who lived fully in the commitments they had made and in the truth by which they were convicted - whether or not the events of this world conformed. These are the ones who help us see that even in the midst of forty days of Lent, there is one eternal Day which has been, will be, and simply always is. We relive that Day at Easter. We learn from Jesus that what makes the difference in difficult decisions is to remember that while we put up the house for sale, or actively pursue a healthy life, or continue to speak the truth, we aren’t to be waiting. With Jesus we are in that eternal day, that eternal life, at the same time we are in this world. It is that Dayspring in which we fully live – in every circumstance that this world brings.

In Christ’s love,

FESTIVAL PLANNING AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Planning for the fall festival is underway with a working steering group and a roster of volunteers that will soon be working out all the details. A tentative date in the fall has been selected and, yes, it conflicts with some other things that will be going on, but, guess what? All the other dates have some conflicts as well. Notice, I said the tentative date. Things could change. Right now we are looking at an all day Saturday and a half-day on Sunday with lots of food, entertainment, music, art, and history of our parish and the community. We will tell our history through our church building and some of our oldest, historic homes. There will be a silent auction as well as a live one. The auctions will be our largest source of income so acquisitions are the key. We need everyone to solicit and contribute quality items for both auctions. Past experience has proven that vacation houses and condos are popular as well as sports memorabilia, trips, golfing excursions, etc. If you can help, please see me.

In January we gathered a group of folks who are interested in photography. We started with about a dozen folks and we have added at least five more in recent days. We’ll meet every three weeks and utilize our more experienced photographers as mentors. Information and tips sharing is an important feature. One of our folks put me onto a web site that proved to be much more helpful than my camera’s operating manual. Our group includes folks from Grace-Calvary, Resurrection, and some other folks from the larger community.

What does all this have to do with “Church”? Well, it’s about community. I recently was part of an academic work group discussing a proposed new course on “Spirituality and Contemporary Society”. One of our members was adamant that this didn’t have anything to do with “Religion”. My position on this is that religion helps form our spiritual beliefs, actions and values. They are each one side of the same coin. All this takes place in community. When you read the Gospels we find that the first order of business for Jesus was to create a community. So, we pray together and we play together. Come join us.

6-8 pm. in St Julian Hall - Holy Eucharist to follow in the sanctuary at 8 p.m.

Rabbi Zvi Altman will conduct the Seder (order) and a traditional dinner will be catered and served in conjunction with this ceremony. Please join us to commemorate the story of the Israelite exodus from Egypt. The Seder is also the context in which Jesus’ last supper with his disciples took place. Our Maundy Thursday Eucharist which will follow the Seder makes the connection between the Jewish Passover and Christ, our Passover.

A donation is requested to cover the cost of the dinner: Adults $15.00 and there is no charge for children under 12 years of age - Sign up sheets are in St. Julian Hall and donations are to be given at the time of the dinner.

Living, Dying, & Paying for it All

Plan to attend the financial planning seminar that the Endowment Fund will sponsor on April 27th following the 11 a.m. service. The seminar entitled Living, Dying, & Paying for it All will have one session dealing with planning for pre-retirement expenses such as the education of children, caring for both children and adults with special needs, and structuring finances with retirement in mind. The other session will deal with post-retirement fiscal and physical needs such as dealing with Social Security and Medicare, estate planning, and eldercare.  Each session will be offered twice so that those attending can attend both and the whole meeting will end at 2:00 p.m.  A box lunch and childcare will be provided for those attending the seminar.
